Accountability Update (25-07-10)

Posted on 25. Jul, 2010 by Aaron in Accountability

Well another accountability update missed, not due to slacking but completely the opposite. I have been manically busy and everything is starting to take off big time. I think there are a few key areas I’ve been concentrating on with one major shock.

Firstly I’ve been working madly on my clients site, this is looking really great now. We still have a problem with the workflow being a bit stop start only because the client themselves have been majorly busy and they run the company very lean with regards to staffing which leaves them little time for producing content.

The major horror has been compiling my accounts for the new accountant, now I’ve made the move to make everything official business wise they’ve basically said don’t worry about previous work you’ve done as it sounds like you’ve spent way more on training than what you’ve earned, only problem is I’ve not realised how much and without putting a figure on it I’d class it as a sizable amount of money, enough to buy a nice car anyhow.

There will be a slight change to these updates in that with there being so much crossover and variation to my work it makes tracking time spent a lot more time consuming so in the future the only timings I’ll be taking will be for client work or timing new procedures for my affiliate work to cost it out.

I’ve also found an amazing web based service by Adobe that I nearly discounted and thought ‘I’ll never use that’ only to give it a full trial run with a works project and get totally blown away by it. This will work really well as an up sell for client work and even more importantly will be great for my own private projects, more on this later down the line but if you can think outside the box for new projects and not just inside the affiliate bubble then this will make you a fair bit of money.

Well, the .co domain was released to the general public in the UK this week. I have managed to snag a really good global domain, one I had to check a couple of times to make sure that it was still in my account. I’ve also managed to register a whole load of county related domains so for a lot of the major terms in the county of Kent in the UK I now own a whole load of important virtual real estate. One friend quizzed me about this and I said I’d rather lose a small investment now than find out these .co’s are going for .com prices 5-10 years down the line.

Finally the big shocker. Anyone who knows me would associate me with SEO and not paid traffic. Well, this has just changed, I picked up Perry Marshalls Adwords guide about 6 weeks ago and hadn’t had chance to read it until a week or two ago. I’m pretty much finished now and have already used a lot of what I’ve learnt already. The way I used to use PPC was very hit and miss, but any useful data was good for supplementing my SEO efforts in way of making educated decisions on keyword choices, but now it’s gone to a whole new level. I started one test campaign a fortnight ago to run with my new methods with a site we had put up which was a little neglected in way of free traffic and was getting a couple of sales a month. Once I started the new campaign we had about 3-4 months worth of sales in a week, there’s a lot more to this but when I get chance I’ll do a detailed review.

As for now I have to go crunch some more numbers ready for the accountants on Monday, then hopefully I can finally say I’m a fully fledged official business in a week or so, you wouldn’t believe how long I’ve waited for this :)
